We travel by boat through the Tortuguero canals into the Colorado River and the Rio San Juan until we reach the border with Nicaragua. On our way we see herons, kingfishers, howler monkeys and other inhabitants of this paradise land. After clearing customs at the Nicaraguan border, a tiny outpost on the banks of the river, we proceed to the Sarapiqui River where crocodiles bask on the river banks and river people wave at you as you pass by their homes. Our private transfer is waiting for us in Puerto Viejo to take us to Arenal. Arenal Volcano towers over lush green pastures and plantations of yucca, papaya, and cassava. Rushing waters heated by the volcano are channeled into pools at Tabacon Hot Springs, offering a relaxing experience after a day of horseback riding or hiking. Lake Arenal remains the best spot in Costa Rica for windsurfing. You may hike at the foot of the volcano, visit La Fortuna waterfall on horseback, or take a full day excursion to the Venado caves or to Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve. And, at night, the most active of all Costa Rica's volcanoes displays a true show of fiery explosions, which will give you a hint of how the earth must have looked in its tumultuous beginnings.
