Costa Rica on my Mind

USD 1551

 DAY 1    San Jose

Meet and greet at the airport and transfer to hotel. Balance of the day at leisure. Services included today: Arrival transfer; overnight accommodations at San Gildar or Barcelo Amon; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.

DAY 2    San Jose – Pacuare - Guapiles

Wild and untamed, the Pacuare River plunges through spectacularly beautiful, largely unexplored tropical wilderness as it winds deep inside one of Costa Rica's most impressive primordial rainforests. You will traverse 20 miles of remote and scenic waters that course through a wilderness of dense vegetation covering the sides of steep gorges that rise above the riverbanks. The thick undergrowth provides shelter for jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloth, and numerous other species of animals and birds. You'll break for a delicious lunch served along the river's edge by your guides. While lunch is being prepared, you'll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery as you marvel at the raw, pounding power of the untamed Pacuare River that for millions of years has coursed through this virgin tropical rainforest. Services included today: Breakfast; transportation from San Jose; full day rafting in the Pacuare; lunch; transfer to Hotel Suerre; overnight accommodations; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.

 DAY 3    Guapiles- Tortuguero

Tortuguero, “Land of Turtles”, the most important nesting area for the green sea turtle in the western Caribbean. A unique system of natural and man-made canals serves as waterways for transportation and exploration. A haven for birdwatchers. The land of the sloth, the manatee, the Baird’s tapir, and the howler monkey. A place to unwind and marvel at the beauty of Mother Nature. Services included today: Land and boat transfer from Guapiles; lunch; hiking or canal boat excursion ; dinner; overnight accommodations at Mawamba Lodge; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.

 DAY 4    Tortuguero

Services included today: All meals; boat tour through the canals or hiking to Cerro Tortuguero; overnight accommodations at Mawamba Lodge; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.

DAY 5    Tortuguero – Nicaragua Border - Sarapiqui - Arenal

A different way of traveling to Arenal. A transfers which is a tour itself. We travel by boat through the Tortuguero canals into the Colorado River and the Rio San Juan until we reach the border with Nicaragua. On our way we see herons, kingfishers, howler monkeys and other inhabitants of this paradise land. After clearing customs at the Nicaraguan border, a tiny outpost on the banks of the river, we proceed to the Sarapiqui River where crocodiles bask on the river banks and river people wave at you as you pass by their homes. Our private transfer is waiting for us in Puerto Viejo to take us to Arenal. Arenal Volcano towers over lush green pastures and plantations of yucca, papaya, and cassava. Rushing waters heated by the volcano are channeled into pools at Tabacon Hot Springs, offering a relaxing experience after a day of horseback riding or hiking. Lake Arenal remains the best spot in Costa Rica for windsurfing. You may hike at the foot of the volcano, visit La Fortuna waterfall on horseback, or take a full day excursion to the Venado caves or to Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve. And, at night, the most active of all Costa Rica's volcanoes displays a true show of fiery explosions, which will give you a hint of how the earth must have looked in its tumultuous beginnings. Services included today: Breakfast; boat and land transfer to Tortuguero; tour of Arenal and Tabacon Hot Springs with dinner; overnight accommodations at Tabacon Resort; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.

 DAY 6    Arenal

Day at leisure. Suggested activities: Horseback riding; hiking; windsurfing or fishing at Lake Arenal; canopy tour; tour to Venado Caves; full day tour to Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. Services included today: Breakfast; overnight accommodations at Tabacon Resort; hotel taxes.

 DAY 7    Arenal - Monteverde

Frequently draped in mist and clouds, Monteverde captures the imagination of even the most cynical among us. It emanates a sense of ancient and enduring life. Algae, mosses and lichens get a foothold on the constantly wet surfaces, providing a place for orchids, bromeliads, ferns and innumerable other plants to cling to. So prolific is this growth in the cloud forest that bare branches are virtually non-existent. And if you look carefully, sitting quietly overhead, its long feathery tail swaying gently in the breeze, there is a scarlet and emerald bird that seems to embody the spirit of the cloud forest: The Resplendent Quetzal. Services included today: Breakfast; transportation to Monteverde; overnight accommodations at Helliconia; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.

 DAY 8    Monteverde

Services included today: Guided tour of Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve; overnight accommodations at Helliconia; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance.
