You will traverse 20 miles of remote and scenic waters that course through a wilderness of dense vegetation covering the sides of steep gorges that rise above the riverbanks. The thick undergrowth provides shelter for jaguars, ocelots, monkeys, sloth, and numerous other species of animals and birds. You'll break for a delicious lunch served along the river's edge by your guides. While lunch is being prepared, you'll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery as you marvel at the raw, pounding power of the untamed Pacuare River that for millions of years has coursed through this virgin tropical rainforest. DAY 5 |
Tortuguero – Nicaragua Border - Sarapiqui - Arenal |
A different way of traveling to Arenal. A transfers which is a tour itself. We travel by boat through the Tortuguero canals into the Colorado River and the Rio San Juan until we reach the border with Nicaragua. On our way we see herons, kingfishers, howler monkeys and other inhabitants of this paradise land. After clearing customs at the Nicaraguan border, a tiny outpost on the banks of the river, we proceed to the Sarapiqui River where crocodiles bask on the river banks and river people wave at you as you pass by their homes. Our private transfer is waiting for us in Puerto Viejo to take us to Arenal. Arenal Volcano towers over lush green pastures and plantations of yucca, papaya, and cassava. Rushing waters heated by the volcano are channeled into pools at Tabacon Hot Springs, offering a relaxing experience after a day of horseback riding or hiking. Lake Arenal remains the best spot in Costa Rica for windsurfing. You may hike at the foot of the volcano, visit La Fortuna waterfall on horseback, or take a full day excursion to the Venado caves or to Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve. And, at night, the most active of all Costa Rica's volcanoes displays a true show of fiery explosions, which will give you a hint of how the earth must have looked in its tumultuous beginnings. Services included today: Breakfast; boat and land transfer to Tortuguero; tour of Arenal and Tabacon Hot Springs with dinner; overnight accommodations at Tabacon Resort; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance. |

DAY 7 |

Arenal - Monteverde |
Frequently draped in mist and clouds, Monteverde captures the imagination of even the most cynical among us. It emanates a sense of ancient and enduring life. Algae, mosses and lichens get a foothold on the constantly wet surfaces, providing a place for orchids, bromeliads, ferns and innumerable other plants to cling to. So prolific is this growth in the cloud forest that bare branches are virtually non-existent. And if you look carefully, sitting quietly overhead, its long feathery tail swaying gently in the breeze, there is a scarlet and emerald bird that seems to embody the spirit of the cloud forest: The Resplendent Quetzal. Services included today: Breakfast; transportation to Monteverde; overnight accommodations at Helliconia; hotel taxes; English-speaking assistance. |
